Areas to stay and Recommended Hotels
Attiki (or Attica) is the region of Greece that includes Athens, its suburbs and Piraeus (the port).
Athens, the capital city of Greece, is renowned for its rich history and cultural significance. The city is home to iconic ancient landmarks, such as the Acropolis, which showcases classical Greek architecture and houses the Parthenon, a symbol of Western civilization. Athens is a vibrant metropolis, blending its ancient heritage with a modern urban landscape. Athens is also known for its lively atmosphere, with numerous cafes, restaurants, and nightlife options contributing to its dynamic social scene.
Some of Athens’ suburbs are located right next to the sea, which is a perfect escape during the summer.
Whilst Athens is in majority a safe city, there are a few places in the city centre that you should rather avoid. We have listed below some of our favourite places in the city centre and also suburbs that we recommend for your stay:
-
City centre: Syntagma, Monastiraki, Plaka, Panepistimio, Thision, Kolonaki, Evangelismos, Megaro Mousikis. They are all within walking distance from the Acropolis and you will have lots of options for hotels/airbnbs and restaurants/bars!
-
Suburbs: Peristeri (bride’s hometown :)) If you would like something different - the 3rd largest municipality of Athens. Quieter and cheaper than the city centre but has the buzz of a big suburb: lovely cafes and restaurants and 3 metro stations on the red line to choose from that take you to the city centre in 10 mins.
-
By the sea: Glyfada, Voula, Vouliagmeni, Vari. Further away from the city centre, with no metro unfortunately, so if you would like to visit the city centre we would advise to get a taxi. However, it is closer to the airport and our venue (Argithea) through some boulevards that do not go through the busy city centre. Also you get to enjoy the sea :)

Metro
Metro is the best way to move around Athens. There are 3 metro lines that cover most of Athens and Pireaus. Sadly, the metro does not yet reach all of the Athens riviera, so better to use taxis if you decide to stay there.

Holiday/Island recommendations
End of May is a lovely time to go to the beach, although still a bit cold, but not as cold as in the UK 😀
You could either stay in Athens in one of the suburbs mentioned above which are by the sea, or take the ferry from Pireaus to one of our amazing islands!
Here are a few personal recommendations:
-
Agistri - https://www.visitgreece.gr/islands/saronic-islands/agistri/ - the closest in Athens, only 1 hour by ferry.
-
Hydra - https://www.visitgreece.gr/islands/saronic-islands/hydra/ - the island where we got engaged :) One of the most picturesque islands, where cars are not allowed. Quiet, lovely restaurants and bars and beautiful beaches within walking distance
-
Cyclades - https://www.visitgreece.gr/islands/cyclades/ this is a group of 33 islands which is close to Athens (roughly 4-5 hours with the ferry). It includes islands such as Mykonos, Santorini, Koufonisia, Paros, Milos, Sifnos which are the most well known and loved. While they may be relatively more expensive, these islands are distinguished by their captivating blue and white Chora (towns), mountainous landscapes, and stunning beaches. Including a Cycladic island visit is a must for anyone seeking a quintessential Greek summer experience.
Open air cinema
This is one of the nicest things to do while in Athens in the summer! There is a variety of open air cinemas to choose from but our personal favourites are: Cine Peran, Cine Paris, Cine Thision
